    Foreign Office - Mon 22nd March 2010 - 8pm

Fab new London act that count Roxy Music, Talking Heads, Hot Chip and a variety of other influences in their mix, and it all gels together to make something rather nice with programmed beats powered with angular pop cuts. Likely to be a big springtime indie disco fave.

Last FM and The FourOhFive present The Not So Silent Film Night - Wed 24th March 2010 - 7pm-11pm (Movie At 8pm)

In conjunction with Last FM and The Four Oh Five, we're back with the Not So Silent Film Night, and more cinematic mayhem!!

So what is The Not So Silent Film Night?

    1. Each month we'll be showing a silent film at Pure Groove. This is what the Silent and Film bits in the name are all about.
    2. Instead of a stuffy cinema feel, well be having a DJ create a soundtrack to the film, which they'll be playing live in sync with the film. Not just random tunes but an actual score, so tense, eerie music in tense, eerie scenes, and full on sex rock in the naughty bits. Although most of these films don't have much nudity - made yonks ago they were! Anyway, this means you can be as loud as you like. Dance. Sing. Scream, "DON'T GO IN THERE" at the top of your voice.
    3. Dressing up gets the thumbs up! Anybody that dresses up will win a prize from The 405 prize vault.
    4. It kicks off at 7 and goes til 11 - movie at 8pm.
    5. It's FREE!

This month's film is The Mask Of Zorro. No, no the shitty one with Catherine Zeta Jones, the great original with Douglas Fairbanks! See you there.

    The Hand Baked Arcade - Sat 27th March 2010 - 7pm-11pm - £3

The Hand Baked Arcade is well known for its temporary, retro computer game installations in nightclubs and festivals across the UK. Hit Club Presents Is Tropical / May 68 - Mon 29th March 2010 - 7-10pm

Somewhere between the frenetic scratchy impulses of the early Late Of The Pier demos and the Casio otherwordly goodness of Metronomy comes a real special act for 2010 - Is Tropical.

May 68 are a new signing to the band and bring an almost Alphabeat-level of good time electro-pop to the table. Haven't played many gigs down south but in their native Manchester, they've built up a massive following!

    The Crookes - Wed 31st March 2010 - 1.30pm

Blinding new art rockers from Sheffield that toch base with classic smart British pop from the last 30 years - hinting at a love of Belle & Sebastian, Gene, The Housemartins and of course, The Smiths. We love, as do NME, which recently gave them a massive write-up on their Radar piece. Catch em now before they become the next pop darlings.

    Victoria & Jacob - Tue 6th April 2010 - 1.15pm

Lovely James Yuill-esque warm pop-soul from London, coming in to showcase their new single. Their sound is lo-fi pop melodies bedded on some great electronic soundscapes and will be perfect for a lunchtime show.

    Alessi's Ark - Wed 7th April 2010 - 8pm

Utterly lovely signing by Bella Union, which has seen the massive early potential in the still frighteningly young Alessi. And no wonder, her fairytale pop already sounds grander, more sophisticated and more dreamy than most artists achieve in their lifetimes.

    135 Grand Street New York 1979 (DVD Screening) - Thu 8th April 2010 - 8pm

Brilliant movie from Soul Jazz that captures New York at a time many people consider among the most vibrant and exciting times in music - late 70s/early 80s. You had Talking Heads, you had Arthur Russell, Grace Jones and a million other seminal figures. But you also had the bands ripping up the conventions and making some of the oddest and most exciting records ever made.

Ericka Beckman’s film captures the driving energy and posturing of early No Wave bands’ performing live in a sparse downtown loft. Featured bands include Theoretical Girls, UT, A Band, Rhys Chatham, Chinese Puzzle, The Static, Morales, Youth in Asia, Morales, Steven Piccolo and Jill Kroesen.

135 Grand Street, New York, 1979 is history. It includes the only known footage of the Theoretical Girls, The Static and a number of other No Wave bands of the period. This is a film about bands filled with painters, filmmakers, actors - and occasionally musicians - thriving and thrashing in the pulsating, vibrant post-punk world of New York where high art met low culture, where Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Wharton Tiers, Taro Suzuki and the others featured here made the connections between John Cage and Joey Ramone, between the questioning of art and ? and the Mysterians.

The film is currently showing as part of Sonic Youth’s ‘Sensational Fix’ touring art exhibition as well as being screened before Glenn Branca’s most recent shows in New York City (Sep 2009).

"If you wanna see what the Soho side of No Wave looked like this is the only place you're ever gonna find it" Glen Branca

    Darwin Deez - Mon 12th April 2010 - 8pm

Pop music has evolved with our second favourite Darwin of all time. Championed by the king of newness, NME’s John Hillcock, the dude with the amazing name (and hair) is coming on like a bedroom Strokes (although we apologise for that - that could be misconstrued - we MEAN THE BAND! Catchier than swine-flu and much, much more fun, Darwin Deez could become one of the summer's most loved new acts, and here's your chance to catch the man before your not-so-hip-pals get into him much later.
